Chimaera

This fish may not have the strangest appearance on this list but it is still very strange and unique. Its also known as a ghostshark because the shark is its closest relative but it actually branched off from sharks more than 400 million years ago. That makes it pretty much a phylogenic orphan. One of the things that make chimeras different from sharks is that they have retractable sexual appendages on their forehead. Jealous? Though they have remained pretty much the same since the age of the dinosaurs, today their numbers are dwindling and they can now only be found in deep water.
