In 1997 Portovenere Cinque Terre and the Islands (Palmaria Tino and Tinetto) were designated as a World Heritage Site. Terraced extensively for the cultivation of vines and olive trees Portovenere Cinque Terre and the Islands are known as much for for their extraordinary landscapes as they are for the settlements that have evolved despite the topographical challenges of the area.
