The El Alamein Memorial Fountain 1 is a fountain and war memorial in the city of Sydney New South Wales Australia. It is located in the Kings Cross area at the entrance to the Fitzroy Gardens on the corner of Darlingurst Road and Macleay Street. 2 The El Alamein Fountain was commissioned as a memorial to soldiers who died in 1942 during the Second World War in two battles at El Alamein Egypt 3 and was designed by the New Zealand born architect Bob Woodward.The El Alamein Fountain in Fitzroy Gardens King Cross opened in 1961 as a memorial to the Australian Imperial Forces 9th Division and commemorates the Battle of El Alamein Egypt in World War II. Over the past seven months the City of Sydney has carefully restored the State Heritage listed fountain to its original condition and has undertaken essential waterproofing works.The restoration was in accordance with the intention of the fountains designer the late Australian architect Robert Bob Woodward and subject to ongoing consultation with his family.
