Nitin Gadkari (born 27 May 1956) is an Indian politician and the current Transport minister under the BJP central cabinet in the 16th Loksabha. Mr Gadkari was appointed to head BJP in December 2009 after the party suffered a defeat in the general elections earlier that year. He is also known for the works during his tenure as a Public Works Department Minister in the state of Maharashta when he constructed a series of roads, highways and flyovers across the state including the Yashwantrao Chavan Mumbai Pune Expressway. In 2012, following an RTI disclosure, a number of irregularities were discovered re: investments in the Purti group, which Gadkari had founded. It was widely reported that this may have been why he failed to be re-elected as BJP president in January 2013. In May 2013, the Inome Tax department assessed the firm as having evaded Rs. 7 crores via improper means. Currently, he is Member of the 16th Lok Sabha from Nagpur constituency.
