Changtang Wildlife Sanctuary

Changhthang Wildlife Sanctuary spread across an area of 4,000 sq km amidst deep gorges and enormous plateaus comprises of the high altitude lakes of Pangong Tso 13,386 ft, Tso Moriri 15,000 ft and Tso Kar 14,800 ft besides a couple of more small lakes. Known as theNorthern Highlandsthe harsh and dry weather leaves the land non cultivable. Surrounded by many mountainous ranges, Changthang sustains diversity of flora and fauna. The lakes here are amongst the most mesmerising in the world which play host to a number of avian life. The region is inhabited by the changpa nomads who migrate from one pastureland to the other throughout the year. The wildlife includes the kiang or the Tibetan wild ass and the black necked crane besides the snow leopard, lynx, wolf gazelle, bharal, argali and the omnipresent mormot.
