Rajnath Singh (born 10 July 1951) is an Indian politician who currently serves as the Union Minister of Home Affairs in the Narendra Modi government. He previously served as the Chief Minister of the state of Uttar Pradesh and as a Cabinet Minister in the Vajpayee Government. He began his career as a physics lecturer and used his long-term connections with the nationalist organisation, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh to become involved with the Janata Party. He also serves as the president of Bharatiya Janata Party .He contested the 2014 Lok Sabha elections from Lucknow constituency and was subsequently elected as a Member of the Indian Parliament. He was appointed as the Union Minister of Home Affairs in the Narendra Modi government and was sworn in on 26 May 2014.
