Shiprock New Mexico

Rising 1,583 feet above the high desert plain on the Navajo Nation in San Juan County, New Mex., Shiprock is an icon of the volcanic Southwest. The formation is sacred to the Navajo people, and climbing it has been illegal since 1970.
