The top photo shows Matisse's finished painting titled The Dance, completed in 1910 and now in the State Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg, Russia. The bottom photo shows the full-size, compositional study he made for the painting, now in MOMA in New York, USA. Matisse painted it on commission from the Russian art collector Sergei Shchukin.
