Precautions while using Washing Machine
These tips should help you and your family to stay safe when using a washing machine.
11. Washer hoses
If your washer is a few years old, your water supply hoses are probably made of rubber which can easily crack and fray. If you see any signs of wear on rubber hoses or if they are more than five years old, they should be replaced with braided steel lines. They come in varied lengths, are not very expensive and install like a garden hose. It will only take one burst rubber hose to make you diligent about water hose quality.
12. Washers and Children
Big loud machines filled with water are a magnet for children and look like a great place to play. Be sure to keep washer doors closed especially on front loading machines. There are also childproof locks that can be installed. Accidents can happen so quickly and most are preventable .
13. Wash pesticide soiled clothing
Spray clothing should be changed and washed daily. The pesticides on your clothes could harm other people who touch them. Keep pesticide soiled clothing away from the family laundry and warn the person who will be washing your spray clothes of possible dangers. The person doing the laundry should wear chemical resistant gloves. Do not allow children to play in or near the contaminated clothing. Do not dry clean pesticide contaminated clothing.
14. Level the washing machine
Install the washing machine at a level that is stable. An unbalanced machine can create quite a bit of rumble while spinning. Installing noise reducing pads under the washing machine will reduce the sound and the wear and tear of the appliance when in use.
15. Avoid using hot water
Use warm or cold water for the wash cycle and the rinse cycle. Research has shown that most detergents work well with water that is moderately warm than hot. For clothes with tough stains, pre soaking in hot water before washing can be more effective than a hot water machine wash.
16. Use the right kind and quantity of detergent
Read the instruction manual on the recommended quantity of detergent for various levels of laundry. Also check for information on detergents to avoid. For example, detergent with excess suds will reduce the washing performance in a front loading machine.
17. Avoid overloading
One large load is certainly more efficient than several smaller loads, but then again dont overload the washing machine. Too many clothes can cause the machine to break down. An overloaded machine will not spin efficiently and will consume more energy.
18. Regular cleaning
Clean the washing machine regularly to avoid build up of odor and detergent residue in the washing drum. Running a empty cycle with lime scale remover or 2 cups of white vinegar will help. Clean the detergent dispenser and the top rim of the wash bucket. Use an appliance washer on the external surface to keep the washing machine looking like new.
19. Regular maintenance
Keep an eye out for any signs of damage in the water supply hoses or electrical wiring of the washing machine. As a precaution change the machines water hoses once every 5 years even if there are no major signs of deterioration. However, if there is a major problem in the machine, dont attempt to fix the machine yourself. Call an electrician or an appliance repair specialist. One of the most important aspects of maintaining your washing machine is to ensure that you have an extended warranty to cover expenses in case of major repairs.
20. Cleaning the water inlet filters
If the washer detects that water is not entering
the dispenser, an error message will show on the
display. If you live in an area with hard water, this
may be caused by clogged inlet filters.
