Precautions while using ATM Machines
The basic units allow the customer to only withdraw cash and receive a report of the account's bala
41. Shred all pre approved credit
Shred all pre approved credit offers mailed to you which you do not accept. An unauthorized individual may gain access to this pre approved form and access credit in your name. There is a magnetic panel on the back side of your ATM card. Keep this safe from scratches and keep it away from your TV. If you have time, withdraw cash only through the authorized ATMs of your bank. The reason is that in case of any ATM error, you can get your cash back on the next working day itself. It takes more time if the ATM is of another bank.
42. Sign your cards
Immediately upon receipt of your credit or debit card, please sign the back of the card. Make sure when using a card at any point of sale that the cashier checks the signature on the card against your signature on the receipt (this will remind the cashier to check for card fraud in the future).
43. Take your receipts
Before leaving the area, make sure you have your original receipt and have destroyed any carbon with your account information. If in two working days you do not get cash back into your account caused by a failed ATM transaction, you can contact the Ombudsman of your bank. The details of contacting your bank Ombudsman will be available at your nearest bank branch.
44. Destroy all expired cards
Destroy all expired cards by cutting through the account number and signature area. Make sure no information can be obtained from expired credit or debit cards. Prepare your transactions (have card out, deposit slip filled out, etc.) before you approach the ATM to minimize the time spent at the machine.
45. Check your monthly statements
Make sure you compare your receipts and authorized drafts against your monthly account statement. If you notice any unauthorized charges, contact your financial institution immediately. Secure your monthly statements immediately after verifying the charges.
46. Choosing PIN
Do not use a number or numbers that can obviously be associated with you for instance your telephone number, birthday, your street number, driving license number or popular number sequences (such as 786 or 2005 or 1111). Be aware of your surroundings before, during, and after the completion of your transaction.
47. Ideally choose a random combination of numbers
Ideally choose a random combination of numbers this is the hardest for a criminal to guess. If this is difficult for you to remember then perhaps use a combination of double numbers e.g.99 along with two others that have some meaning for you.
48. Security information
Do not allow anyone else to use your card, PIN or other security information. 2) Always memorize your PIN and other security information. If the PIN you are provided with is difficult to remember, change it to something more memorable at a cash machine as soon as possible. 3) Always take reasonable steps to keep your card safe and your PIN secret at all times. Neither your bank nor any agency is authorized to ask you to disclose your PIN.
