31. Crown Fountain Millenium Park Chicago
Designed by Spanish artist Jaume Plensa the Crown Fountain in Millennium Park is a major addition to the citys world renowned public art collection. The fountain consists of two 50 foot glass block towers at each end of a shallow reflecting pool. The towers project video images from a broad social spectrum of Chicago citizens a reference to the traditional use of gargoyles in fountains where faces of mythological beings were sculpted with open mouths to allow water a symbol of life to flow out.Plensa adapted this practice by having faces of Chicago citizens projected on LED screens and having water flow through an outlet in the screen to give the illusion of water spouting from their mouths. The collection of faces Plensas tribute to Chicagoans was taken from a cross section of 1 000 residents. The fountain water features operate during the year between mid spring and mid fall while the images remain on view year round.

The waterplay area consists of 251 jets that shoot 12 to 35 feet 4 to 10 m in the air and also creates a beautiful water sculpture thats essentially the front yard of the nearby museum. An important formal architectural landmark that is also a fun and playful space the computer controlled fountain concept has since been replicated in other urban designs such as Dundas Square in Toronto and in commercial uses such as the Bellagio Fountains at the Bellagio Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas Nevada.The fountain area is surrounded by flags representing the host countries of each Summer Olympics preceding the 1996 games and eight 65 foot tall light towers reminiscent of classical Greek marker columns.There are several pieces of sculpture scattered through the park including a statue of Pierre de Coubertin father of the modern Olympic movement. A small amphitheatre is located at the southern end of the park.

A few weeks ago I traveled to Stockholm Sweden to visit Millesgarden the home studio and gardens of Swedish sculptor Carl Milles 1875 1955 and to see the famous God and the Rainbow sculpture fountain by Milles in Nacka Strand Sweden.Millesgarden Curator Evelina Berglund spent an afternoon with me and my husband showing us Carl and Olga Milles home and studios the stunning sculpture and botanical gardens where we saw two Marshall Fredericks sculptures Leaping Gazelle and The Thinker and the exhibition hall that was constructed in 1999 for temporary exhibitions. It was all exquisite and memorable.At age 87 Fredericks was asked by the director of Millesgarden to enlarge a 1930s sketch model by Milles into an eighty six foot high bronze sculpture to be permanently sited in the harbor at Nacka Strand. The God and the Rainbow sculpture fountain is seen annually by hundreds of thousands of visitors to Stockholm who pass it by on cruise ships and smaller aquatic vessels in the harbor. It is more beautiful and powerful than I could have imagined.

In the winter the fountain is converted to a skating rink.The design for the city hall met with some controversy when it was first announced. The original design called for the building to be topped with four cones. The cones were meant to pay tribute to the tipis that the First Nations once lived in on the site. The design met with negative feedback from the public as they felt it looked like dunce caps and nuclear reactors. 7 Dub Architects then revised their design to replace the cones with the pyramids with the pyramids designed to be evocative of the Rocky Mountains. The design was received much more warmly by the public and was dubbed Pyramid Power by the press.

Over the past seven months the City of Sydney has carefully restored the State Heritage listed fountain to its original condition and has undertaken essential waterproofing works.The restoration was in accordance with the intention of the fountains designer the late Australian architect Robert Bob Woodward and subject to ongoing consultation with his family.
