There is nothing too remarkable about this fountain except during St. David Day Welsh St. Patrick Day when the Castle Square Fountain and the waterfall are dyed a deep red. This gives way to their fountain being called the blood fountain. The water stays dyed red from March 1 St. David Day until March 9.

Created by Alexander Calder for the Spanish Republican government to memorialize the siege of Almaden. This was first displayed in Paris in 1937 during the World Exhibition. The floating tap fountain is a clever illusion. It consist of a faucet mysteriously hovering above a pool or basin with an endless supply of water gushing out of it from seemingly nowhere. The faucet remains surprisingly steady despite having no visible support and where is all this water coming from.This spectacular effect is achieved by a transparent tube in the middle of the water column that holds the tap in place and at the same time keeps feeding it with water pumped from below. The water goes up through the tube and exits at the top. The water column which is usually turbulent effectively hides the tube from view.Several giant floating tap fountains can be found around Spain Belgium US Canada and other parts of the world. The design of the fountain is based on the Bassin de Latone at the Versailles Palace near Paris and was built by Edward H. Bennett who had also constructed the Michigan Avenue Bridge.The fountain rises more than 7 meters high 23ft and consists of 3 layers of bassins surrounded by four pairs of bronze seahorses.
