Kiran Bedi is an Indian politician, social activist and a retired Indian Police Service officer.

Kiran Bedi was the first woman police officer of the Indian Police Service. Spectators at the 1973 Republic Day Parade were amazed to see a lady at the head of the Police Contingent. The then Prime Minister, Mrs. lndira Gandhi was so impressed that she invited Kiran for breakfast with her the very next day.

In 1977, she put an end to the AkaliNirankari Sikh riots at India Gate.
1979, as DCP West Delhi, she broke up a 200yearold illicit liquor trade.
In 1981 as DCP Traffic she controlled traffic during the 1982 Asian Games efficiently. She didnt hesitate to tow away cars and once even challaned the Prime Ministers car for wrong parking near a car repair shop.
In 1985, as DCP headquarters she ordered 1600 pending promotions to be made in a single day. Standing instructions were issued that if any file was not cleared within three days the person concerned would be called personally to explain the delay.
In 1993, as the Inspector General of Asias biggest jail the Tihar jail 9100 inmates including 300 women she turned the unlivable jail into an abode of education. Said Kiran while joining her posting at the jail, I want to transform this jail into an Ashram within six months. She introduced many classes and programs for the inmates including those on basic education, meditation, yoga besides functions like mushairas, kavi sammelans, dramas and games, which involved the jail inmates. For her effort to humanize the Tihar jail she was honored with the 1994 Ramon Magsaysay Award.

In the 90s she was transferred to the Tihar Jail, known as the most Notorious jail in India. She alone transferred the jail into a peaceloving ashram by introducing literacy and meditation programs. This act of courage fetched her, The Magsaysay Award and a memorable place in the history of Indian Police.

Kiran Bedi is one of the important social activist in the crusde against malaise of corruption along with Anna Hazare and Shanti Bhusan famous jurist. She was detained alongside veteran social activist Anna Hazare and Shashi Bhushan on 16, August 2011.
Bedi, who is an active member of Hazares crusade against corruption, told Times Now channel that she received formal release letters. She along with Anna Hazare and Shanti BHushan have been released.
Terming the detention cum arrest of Anna Hazare as undemocratic and unconstitutional, Kiran Bedi earlier in the day said that emergency has revisited the country.
This is totally undemocratic and un -constitutional. This has not been done by Delhi Police; somebody elseis behind it. She said Delhi Police is capable enough to handle such peaceful protests.
Kiran Bedi brought crowning glory to police profession of the countrty and became living example of rendering yeomen social service after retirement.

17. Marriage with kiran bedi
It was on the tennis court that Brij met his wife, Kiran Bedi who was a member of the Service Club in Amritsar. A whirlwind romance was followed by a quiet temple wedding, and soon after Kiran left to be trained as the first woman IPS officer of the country. Kirans parents moved in with her and Brij chose to remain in Punjab although he was constantly in touch with his daughter Saina, who was born in 1975. He then moved on to setting up a textile processing machinery unit at Amritsar. In his factory Brij was ever ready to help anyone in need and supported artists by holding artists camps in his factorys premises.
