Car makers are continually trying to outdo each other and this week the new 1,341hp Koenigsegg Agera One:1 scaled new heights whenits 1,341hp output broke the computer that was used to register it.

The One:1 is the world s first road car to produce 1 Megawatt of power, making it the most potent street legal vehicle in existence. Koenigsegg s latest creation is in illustrious company. Here in reverse order are the top 20 most powerful road cars in the world.

Porsche tuner RUF decided to branch out on its own, stop fettling 911s and make a bona fide supercar. The result is a mid engined monster with a 3.8 litre turbocharged flat six Porsche engine. Looks lovely, too.

You ll find the word andturbo cropping up quite a lot in this piece mainly because if you want big power, it s the way to go. Saleen took the already stonking 7.0 litre Ford V8 in its regular S7 and attached a pair of blowers to it to create the ridiculously rapid S7 Twin Turbo.

There are three different versions of Gumpert s Apollo model: the standard varaint with andjust 650hp, the Sport model with andonly 700hp, or this Race edition with a whopping 800hp. All use a 4.2 twin turbo Audi V8 from the old RS6.

This is the first Koenigsegg to make the list of the most powerful road cars, but it s most definitely not the last. That the Swedish supercar builder s first entry into the rundown kicks out 806hp is impressive.

Whereas all the cars before this use just one motor to make they re horsepower, the Porsche 918 Spyder uses three. One electric motor at the front produces 125hp, one at the rear delivers 154hp and one whacking great 4.6 litre petrol V8 from an old Porsche Le Mans car sits in the middle making 608hp. The result is bonkers acceleration.

Like the Porsche, the McLaren P1 is a new breed of hybrid hypercar, combining electricity with petrol to deliver simply stunning levels of power. Unlike the Porsche, however, it only uses one electric motor (179hp), but its V8 is turbocharged to produce 737hp. 916hp in total.

We ll forgive you if you ve not heard of Spanish supercar maker Spania and its GTA Spano. You ll remember the name if you feel the considerable hit from its supercharged Dodge Viper V10, though.

Look at that power figure. This is the base spec Koenigsegg Agera. The entry level grade. The andL model. The one with hubcaps. And it still makes 960hp from its bespoke twin turbo 5.0 litre V8. Wow.

Ferrari takes the honours in the hybrid sub class with its new LaFerrari. This is the typical exotic, high power spec brought bang up to date with hybrid technology. The 800hp 6.3 litre V12 is nearly as powerful as the Porsche 918 s combined output on its own; the extra 163hp from the electric motor blows the McLaren out of the water, too.
