The Johns Hopkins University (commonly referred to as Johns Hopkins, JHU, or simply Hopkins) is a private research university in Baltimore, Maryland.The university was founded on January 22, 1876, and named for its benefactor, the philanthropist Johns Hopkins.[5] Daniel Coit Gilman was inaugurated as the first president on February 22, 1876.The institution pioneered the concept of the modern research university in the United States and has ranked among the world's top such universities throughout its history. The National Science Foundation (NSF) has ranked Johns Hopkins #1 among U.S. academic institutions in total science, medical and engineering research and development spending for 31 consecutive years. As of 2011, 37 Nobel Prize winners have been affiliated with Johns Hopkins over the course of 120 years. The university's research has been ranked as the third most cited of any institution globally, earning it a far-reaching reputation as one of the most prestigious universities in the world.Johns Hopkins maintains campuses in Maryland and Washington, D.C. along with international centers in Italy, Malaysia, China and Singapore.
